August 2011
Bleecker Bakery has come a long way. First known for its delicious desserts, you'll find sweets from Bleecker in restaurants throughout the country. But the desserts are only the first part of the story. Bleecker Bakery is now a chain of dairy restaurants in cities throughout Israel offering a full menu from breakfast through dinner and even a midnight snack.

Bleeker Bakery Kosher Cafe

We welcome the new branch of Bleecker Bakery on the Jerusalem's downtown Midrachov. This (mehadrin) restaurant is beautifully decorated. The space is elegant and comfortable and the staff is obliging. Here, in the heart of the capitol of Israel, you will feel like you are dining in an old-world European cafe. Hence the slogan:
"Bleecker Bakery—A matter of good taste"

Sit outside and watch the world stroll by or sit inside at a booth or table and watch the outdoor scenes from the comfortable indoors. There is plenty of space for your group or your party. Everyone will enjoy the convenient location, the ambiance and the great food.

Something delicious is cooking at Bleecker Bakery any time of the day. The breakfast menu is varied and enticing. There are light options a\s well as shakshuka plain or with eggplant. Both dishes come with a side salad, bread, and a choice of hot of cold drinks.

My companion and I stopped at Bleecker Bakery for an early dinner. The restaurant was about half occupied, but the room was bustling. We found a comfortable table in a quiet corner and before we knew it there were menus on the table. English men? No problem.

Perusing the menu we were first impressed with the variety. There are many vegetable dishes, which we appreciated. There is a full choice of salads and sandwiches. Then there are the chef's specials which are the most enticing. My companion chose the Portobelo mushrooms stuffed with cheese. He tried to encourage me to go for the rolled eggplant dish, which was very attractive, but I was in a powerful mood for lasagna, which was winking at me from my first glance at the menu.

The two huge crisply mushrooms on my companion's plate were topped with slightly sweet mushrooms marinated in Teriyaki sauce. My lasagna was a sizable square cut off from what I guess is a large sheet of lasagna. It was covered in a creamy tomato sauce. Each of these dishes was served with a side salad. A request for salad dressing (though the salad was already lightly dressed) was answered with a boat of amazing creamy citrus dressing.

We were impressed with the large number of servers on the floor at all times. Someone was available to help us if our primary waiter was out of earshot. We also appreciated the pace that the dishes came out of the kitchen. There was very little waiting for our meals, which was especially impressive because in addition to other couples, there was a large party at one end of the restaurant. This did not seem to effect the pace of the kitchen and our meals were served promptly. While we were waiting we had a chance to enjoy the restaurant ambiance. The furniture, the wall paper, and the design gives Bleecker Bakery a pleasant old-world feel.

Call me "yachner" but I like to glance at the other tables to see other dishes. We saw a large number of salads and sandwiches, but we were most impressed with the drinks. Those tall glasses filled to the brim and condensation on the outside never fail to excite me. The famous "I'll have what she is having" comes to mind.

Though I was very pleased with my choice of lasagna and my companion was delighted with his mushroom dish, I really wanted to try one of the pastry-based foods. The menu offers a fine selection of quiches. These are individual round pies about the size of a dessert plate, served with salad.

The Bakery Pastry Menu

To make the Bleecker Bakery flavors last a little longer and to give me a chance to try a pastry, I took an order of quiche home for lunch the next day. It was not easy deciding between the mushroom quiche with basil and olive oil and the Mediterranean quiche with goat cheese, peppers, parsley, and olives. There are also sweet potato and broccoli quiches. I went with the recommendation of our waiter, who suggested the mushroom. And so it was. They package it up nicely and it is ready to pop into my oven for tomorrow's lunch.

Bleecker Bakery's fine reputation starts with its desserts, and I was sorely tempted to indulge in one of these amazing looking creations. The fresh pastries filled with chocolate and fruit looked especially inviting. But the lasagna and the salad were enough for me so we agreed to come back another time for a dessert.

Our two main courses, a cup of coffee and my take away quiche came in under 200 shekels. Desserts can come to 30 shekels, so with a dessert we would have crossed 200 shekels.

Bleecker Bakery on the midrachov will take you back to the old world bakeries of Europe, with a fresh Israeli twist.
