Gueta
February 2016
Tripoli comes to Tel Aviv at Gueta Restaurant in Ramat Hachayal. Maybe not all of Tripoli but certainly the cuisine. If you like to try the flavors of different cultures or you just like a good rich meaty meal, you have come to the right place.
Gueta is a Libyan restaurant, specializing in Tripolitan food.
The decor is homey, clean and inviting. The service is efficient, the food is tasty and the whole experience is soft on the pocketbook.
If you like a culinary challenge and you enjoy trying new flavors, there is no place better than Gueta.
About The Gueta Menu
If you are not familiar with traditional Libyan food, this will be a new experience. You are about to learn some new names and experience new flavors, and textures. Libyan food is flavorful and tasty, without being too spicy. Though the food has its unique character, Libya is a Mediterranean country where olives (and olive oil), fish, garlic, and the other elements of the Mediterranean diet figure prominently.
Open your meal with an array of unusual salads, which includes Masiir- Tripolitan style pickled vegetables, cabbage salad, pickled lemons and Charshi, a wonderful puree of pumpkin and beans. Salads are particularly delicious on the super-fresh bread that comes with them.
For appetizer, along with the salads, we recommend the traditional charaime Nile Perch, served in a sea of spicy tomato sauce. Soup up the sauce with the bread. Nobody is looking. Other openers include real soups, couscous, and the signature Mafrum which is, more or less, sliced potatoes stuffed with a meat-and-vegetable filling.
There are a number of traditional main-dish options, including schnitzel and chicken in tomato sauce. But if you are here for the ethnic culinary experience the Complete Couscous should be your choice. This is an all-in-one meal, includes couscous, tbicha (a spinach, pumpkin - or cumin-based meat-and-bean concoction, not unlike chulent), and mafrum. Stuffed vegetables are an essential element in this cuisine. Another specialty is the yabrak stuffed cabbage Tripoli style, and
Machsia peppers stuffed with vegetables or meat.
Bring the family to Gueta. The kids will enjoy their favorites:
Schnitzel + chips,
Pasta and
Kifta Meatballs with couscous and you will enjoy the price: NIS 25.
Apparently in Libya there is only one dessert safra, a semolina cake with date filling. This is worth the try. Whatever you do, don't overlook the tea, which is sweetened with caramelized sugar, spiced with cloves, and sprinkled with peanuts a not-to-be-missed treat.
Friday Take Away:
There is more good news at Gueta Ramat Hachayal. On Fridays the restaurant offers take away foods. Behind the counter is a row of pots filled with bubbling slow-cooked stews. These stews cook for hours over small flames as they were cooked in days of yore. There are meat stews and couscous with vegetables, and with it be sure to pick up some humus and pickled vegetables. There is plenty of street parking in Ramat Hachayal on Friday and the eLuna 10% discount applies to the take away.
From the Menu: Tripolitan Salads: NIS 7, Cabbage Salad: NIS 15, Bastil: NIS 10, Chicken in tomato sauce: NIS 37, Charaime: NIS 38, Couscous 32 NIS, Stuffed Vegetables: NIS 42, Safra: NIS 10, Children's menu: NIS 25.
