Refael Grill Bar
January revised February 2015
Elegant, beautifully designed, modern yet classical and classy are just some of the words that spring to mind when you walk into the Refael Grill Bar. We found this kosher treasure around the corner from the Blumfield Sports Stadium.
Refael is a Bukharan Grill restaurant. Of Bukharan origin, Refael the proprietor has a passion for the food of his ancestral home. He has made it his mission to share the secrets of Bukharan cuisine with the Israeli public. Alongside the Bukharan specialties there is a great selection of fine grilled meats and the Mediterranean dishes we Israelis know and love.
There are many things to recommend this restaurant but here are three unique items:
1. This is the only kosher restaurant in Israel with an authentic Bucharan menu.
2. The restaurant is mehadrin, badatz Yoreh Deah Rav Machpud. Shmita L'chumra. This is the only restaurant in Tel Aviv with this stringent kashrut.
3. Refael has 3 beautifully outfitted party rooms complete with audio visual electronics. In addition to serving diners in the main hall, the restaurant can have three parties running at the same time. One will never know about the other.
eLuna Members Visiting Refael Bucharan Restaurant
A traditional Bucharan meal, we were told, starts with a pot of tea. There is a ritual to the first pot of tea, so take note: The host pours himself the first cup and then pours it back into the pot. This is to make sure that the essense of the tea is properly mixed. Then he pours a cup for himself, and only then for each of his guests. The guests come last because as the tea settles in the pot, it gets richer and more delicious. That better part is saved for the guests.
Manager Yaakov will treat eLuna members to the tea ritual if you show your eLuna coupon at the start of the meal. No point in having tea after the meal.. Also, eLuna members can swap their 10% discount coupon for a bottle of wine. A couple can have a small bottle instead of the discount and two couples dining together can have a full bottle of house wine instead of the 10% discount. Your choice.
About The Refael Menu
Refael Grill Restaurant has a full menu of grilled meats and a section of unique Bucharan dishes. The restaurant has an open kitchen where you can see the foods prepared including the beautifully grilled, succulent meats.
The premium entrecotes come in two sizes 250 or 330gr for those of us with bigger appetites. There are lamb ribs, delicately spiced pullet steaks and even entrecote hamburgers with chips. If you like your meat skewered, there is beef, spring chicken, lamb and even veal sweetbread all served with grilled onions and tomatoes. This is truly a meat eaters paradise.
Fish dishes are freshly made with flavorful sauces. The sea bream comes baked in a coriander and garlic marinade, and the skillet seared salmon steak in a zesty lemon sauce with grilled vegetables. Do ask the waiter about the catch of the day; as this changes from day to day.
Refael has some surprises in store on the Bukharan specialty menu, the highlight of your visit. Start with the shurpa a meat soup, slow cooked with lots of vegetables. For mains choose between oshpelo a delicious delicately spiced lamb stew with carrots and rice, or dushpara dim sum or tortellini-like pockets filled with meat, in a tart salsa sauce. Unique and heart warming, youll be so glad you tried them.
Every dish at Refael has that little bit of extra ‘je ne sais quoi.’ The Baladi eggplant is served with the customary techina and the addition of tasty pepper salsa, and a sprinkling of pine nuts. Similarly the chicken liver pt comes with a beautifully prepared cherry tomato comfiture simply delicious.
The dessert menu also reflects the mix of food cultures that is Refael: Oh so yummy chocolate souffl with ice cream, heavenly pistachio chocolate cake or from the Middle East Malabi Refael (a creamy rose water flavoured pudding), or a platter of Baklava - light and sweet.
As befits a restaurant of this standard, there is a good choice of wines the house wine can be ordered by the glass. in addition there are all kinds of whiskey, vodka and liqueurs. Last but by no means least, Refael has three beautifully appointed rooms suitable for private functions, the largest of which can accommodate up to 60 diners. Have a look while youre there we guarantee that youll be impressed!
