Vineyard:
Dalton
Wine: Merlot, 1999
Type: Dry Red
This Merlot has been aged in oak casks for 14 months.
It is light and mellow with a very soft aroma and very light,
tender, taste.
The
merlots that we drink are never 100% merlot. If they were, there
would be too much of a risk that the taste would either be too
bland or too sharp -depending on the quality of the harvest.
Merlot and cabernet sauvignon grapes respond well as a blend.
The secret to a great merlot is finding the proper proportions
and blend. This Dalton Merlot '99 is a 90% / 10% blend.
I
think that it is too soft and too flat. It would be much better
to have an 80% / 20%.
This
wine is very disappointing. To be honest, it tastes like a merlot
- an average, simple merlot.
