Luntz Street off Jerusalem's Ben-Yehuda Midrachov (pedestrian walkway), is home to two Rimon restaurants: the dairy Cafe Rimon and the meat restaurant Josef Rimon (formerly Rimon Bistro). The two restaurants are next to one another, with separate kitchens. The Rimon restaurant group now also includes Rimon Cafe in Mamila and a Rimon Cafe in Beit Shemesh.
Josef
Rimon Restaurant, named for the founding father of the now Rimon empire, is an all meat Mehadrin restaurant. If you are a meat lover who appreciates expertly prepared high-end cuts and meat that challenge the traditional kosher cooking methods, Josef Rimon Restaurant is for you.
A short lesson in Jerusalem culinary history:
Rimon has been feeding Yerushalmim for 75 years. This is where it all began and Josef is the guy who began it. Rimon off Ben Yehuda is one of the oldest restaurants in Jerusalem located in a preserved early 20th centrury building in a perfect location between the midrachov and Jaffa Street. The restaurant is just steps from the Jaffa Street light rail stop.
The story of Rimon is the story of culinary Jerusalem. Founder Josef opened the restaurant in 1948 after he was freed from the captivity of the Jordanian Legion. By then Jerusalem had been his home for 20 years.
Veteran Yerushalmim will remember when this location was a lot less attractive for dining, as it was the home of the Aviv and Nesher taxi services, complete with traffic and automotive exhaust. Gone are the taxis and this area is quiet and pleasant for either indoor or outdoor dining.
The restaurant has a comfortable spacious interior that opens to a pleasant outdoor patio, now free of cars.
Josef's son Ronen has expanded the restaurant and the building now has both this meat restaurant and the dairy Rimon Cafe, with separate kitchens.
Josef Rimon Restaurant:
Josef Rimon is the new updated Rimon Bistro Restaurant. The decor has been upgraded and the menu includes additional high end dishes.
The menu is a one-page selection of starters, steaks and skewers, main courses, chicken salads, burgers and meat sandwiches. The menu encourages sharing, with specially priced mixed meat platters for groups of 3-5 diners ranging from NIS 330 to NIS 740 depending on the mix of meats.
The grill menu offers lamb chops price by the 100 gram, entrecote skewers and other high end cuts, The main course menu includes meat stews,
If you are looking for a non-meat dish and you think you found one under salads, sorry. These are chicken salads.
The only non meat menu items are the vegetarian salads from the starter menu.
To start your meal with a little taste of everything, choose the Josef Platter. This is a mix of asado cigars, chicken nuggets, meat nuggets and fried cauliflower served with several dips. If you are saving your appetite for the main course, choose just one of the starters.
Ronen points to two signature Josef Rimon dishes. The first is slow oven-cooked lamb, which he says is outstanding both because of the quality of the meat and the preparation by expert chef Itai Atia. The lamb is offered at the restaurant based on availability of the lamb meat.
A second signature dish at the restaurant is the stir-fried chicken liver (NIS 96), a dish that you rarely find on a restaurant menu these days. The menu also offers skewered chicken liver, but the stir-fried liver in wine with onions and mushrooms is the star of the show. My mother taught me that kashrut demands that liver be grilled on the fire. But then my mother didn't have smicha. Yes, said Ronen, first it is grilled and then stir-fried. A generous bowl was delivered to our table, well over what we could eat, though my companion made a heroic effort to meet the challenge. The livers were just the right texture, not tough or too soft, and the wine sauce brought the combination of meat, mushrooms and onions together perfectly.
