Vineyard:
Alfasi Reserve Chile Barkan
Wine: Cabernet Sauvignon, 1998
Type: Dry Red
This wine comes in a beautiful bottle. The red of the wine serves
as a backdrop against which a lovely, green, leafy tree rests.
It is spectacular. If a wine could be judged by its bottle and
label alone, this would be a winner.
Upon
tasting, however, my expectations were dashed.
It
is inexpensive and it is drinkable, but nothing more. This Cabernet Sauvignon
lacks body and has very little bouquet. The taste is as weak as is the
color, which is especially light and pale for a Cabernet.
Over
these past few years Chile has imported several wines to Israel. In the
non-kosher wine world Chilean wines are known to be reasonably priced
decent wine (as in the case of Domingo Rey wines). But in this case,
while the price is very reasonable, the wine is only mediocre.
My
recommendation would be to age the wine in good casks for at least another
year before bottling and shipping to unsuspecting Israelis.
